AMINDAJ - Contramaestre - Santiago de Cuba

The Esperanto group of traditional Cuban music AMINDAJ (pron. ah-MEEN-dye) was founded on 30 August 2009 by Graciela Morgado Rodríguez – a teacher, and president of the local Esperanto club in the town of Contramaestre – with the purpose of making Esperanto more widely known throughout the Cuban culture.
Graciela gathered a group of young Esperantists, some from the provincial arts school in Santiago de Cuba and other enthusiastic musicians, all with great interest for the project. Two dancers were added to show during performances how one dances to traditional Cuban music.
From its beginning the group could count on the unconditional support of Julio César Tamayo Salas. After several months of painstaking rehearsal, the band presented its first performance on 4 February 2010 in the city cultural center of Isidro Iglesias del Rey before an Esperanto audience. The second occurred on 13 March of the same year in the cinema/theater Belic in Contramaestre with the participation of the president of the Cuban national Esperanto association, who at the time was Julián Hernández Angulo, writer and composer of most of the songs interpreted by Amindaj.
Julián proposed that Amindaj take part in the 95th Universal Congress of Esperanto (Universala Kongreso, or UK) to represent Cuban musical culture.
Amindaj played in the «Café Cantante» of the Palace of Conventions and in the National Theater of Cuba in Havana for the UK in July 2010, during which they were exceptionally warmly received. Following these performances Amindaj was invited to play for the young people’s congress (Internacia Junulara Kongreso, or IJK), which took place in Villa Jibacoa. After the enormous success of their IJK concert, Łukasz Żebrowski (current president of the Esperanto youth organization TEJO, Tutmonda Esperantista Junulara Organizo) and Ana Montesinos organized a collection to help the band record its first album. Thereafter Roy McCoy of UEA proposed to Vinilkosmo the production of the album.
Amindaj actively participate in various Esperanto cultural events in their country, and also participate in cultural festivals organized by their city and province cultural institutions.

Amindaj is not only a band, but also a cultural project.

Despite several difficulties and changes in the band, they continue working; the result of their hard work is the second album "Amindaj amas vin" recorded during the month of July 2014.
